Happy Valentine's Day!

Wishing you a wonderful day!
It took a long time, before love and romance was connected to Valentine. Before that it was a western christian liturgical celebration for all those saints named Valentine. Here in Sweden there is a little bit different story to it. There is the martyrdom, liturgical feast and the saint, of course, but it was not until 1990's this celebration started to grow here. There had been some tests earlier in the lat 1950's and early 1960's, but that did not work. Today, on the 14th February, the flower shops sell over four million roses. And when the roses are sold out, you can buy dark red tulips and carnations.

I have never, really, celebrated this day. When I was younger, we mostly showed our love to the parents and the friends we had. It could be more as a friend's day.

Made a pair of boots to Noomi
I have not been so active these latest weeks on social media. I have mostly been crocheting, using my coloring apps and watching some movies on my free time. It has been a lovely"break". I made a pair of boots to Noomi. I have made some for Esther and Zipporah in the early beginning, out of fabric. These are the first crocheted ones. I took a pattern for baby boots and resized it with 2/3. Had to give it a try a couple of times until I found the right size. I used yarn that even can be shrunken with hot water. So I washed the boots in hot water, put some plastic bags, tiny ones, one Noomi's feet and put the moist booties on her feet and let try. They are perfect now. You can even iron, but there is a risk with that - you can burn the yarn and yourself. I am happy with the results and boots feel warm, soft and cozy!

And with that said, I wish you a Lovely and Happy Valentine's Day.

    1. Now I learned something new and that is a very good thing. And if I am right, then I maybe should say Happy Lupercalia! :) And thanks, it was nice to work with my hands again, and make something.

  3. I love the boots! They're adorable!

As you might know, Finland has Ystävänpäivä instead of Valentine's day. I remember giving cards to my friends when I was a teenager as Valentine's day came here about that time. I don't send out cards anymore, but I do like to have a little photo in my FB and Instagram or so. I see my friends rarely, but everytime I see them feels special so it's just not on one day in particular. :)

    Hyvää ystävänpäivää Niina. :)

    1. Thank you Xaya!

Yes, I know. My old childhood friend and some near relatives send cute cards with notes about friendship. It is harder to find similar cards here, almost all are just between loved ones, in a relationship. Usually I buy ordinary cards with a cute teddy, cat or something like that and send it. I'm glad about the social media, in this way - you can keep in touch and never miss valuable time. But otherwise I prefer the old-fashioned-way. :D

Ja Hyvää ystävänpäivää myös sinulle, Xaya!

  5. I always love reading about the background of these special days. Thank you for posting about them. Hope your had a wonderful Valentine's Day.

We don't really celebrate it either as hubby and I are of the mind that saying I love you should be an everyday thing and not set aside for one day a year.

You did a great job on those boots. They are so cute. I have only ever tried to crochet shoes once and it didn't turn out pretty!

    1. We had a nice Valentine's Day, thank you! :) And I agree with you, saying and sharing love should be an everyday thing. It is the small things that matter.

Thanks, it was a fun experience to make a pair of boots. My dad learned med to knit and crochet when I was a kid, mum never had the patience :D Well, she could learn out how to cross stitch, though. I have always enjoyed to make something with my hands, create, but the carpal tunnel can mess things up. But I will not give up, not even after my hands "fall" off. Hehe! :D With the right support one can come a long way.

Well, why not try again? One learns along the way.

  6. Those are interesting things about Valentines day. I think in Japan, it's more about the woman giving treats to their men. :P My husband and I have been together for twelve years, so we just do little things for each other these days, or have a nice meal.

I LOVE those boots!!! I always wanted to learn how to crochet! Maybe I'll make that my creative goal for next year! :D

    1. I read an article a couple of days ago, just before Valentine's Day, that in Islamabad, Pakistan, it is now forbidden to celebrate this day. No cards, no flowers and absolutely no advertising. They who sell flowers are worried, because now they have lots of roses they can not sell. It can really be different from place to place.

After several years in a relationship one knows what the other one likes. You have each other and that is the most important thing. That can be celebrated everyday.

Thank you! Sounds like a great idea to have crocheting as a creative goal! Thumbs up and happy weekend!

  7. Hi Niina,
Although Valentine's Day is celebrated by many in Australia, my hubby and I don't. We don't need a special day to celebrate the love we have for each other.

Looks like you have been having fun with your crochet, the little boots are cute.
    Hugs,
    X

    1. Hellou there!
      Hope that all is fine!
If one thinks about it, there really are no need for those special days for showing love, appreciation or respect. It should be a totally natural part of ones day, every day.
Thanks, it was a fun little project to make a pair of boots. :)
      Hugs!
